spend five days exploring Morocco’s fossil-rich region and the Sahara. This trip combines hands-on fossil hunting (Devonian marine fossils and dinosaur-era Kem Kem finds), a full desert experience to Erg Chebbi, and a final day dedicated to fossil craftsmanship and museums around Erfoud.
When you arrive in Errachidia, we’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel (Xaluca). The rest of the day is for relaxing and settling in. In the evening, we’ll go over the plan for the next days and answer any questions so you feel ready for the adventure.
After breakfast, we head toward the Devonian fossil areas near Erfoud. We start by visiting a crinoids quarry to see how these fossils are found and extracted—often several meters below the surface. From there we visit areas where you can see stones with ammonites and orthoceras, then we continue to the trilobite hunting sites.
We start from the hotel and take the old Paris–Dakar route toward Erg Chebbi. Along the way we visit a nomad family and learn about life in the desert today. We also stop in a Gnawa village and visit the Hassi Labied oasis.
After lunch, there’s an optional ATV tour if you want more adrenaline. Later we ride camels into the dunes toward the desert camp. The night includes dinner, a campfire, and live music under the stars.
Today we take the road toward the Kem Kem Beds to explore dinosaur-age fossil areas. This day is focused on the Cretaceous story—river systems, ancient wildlife, and the famous fossils that made Kem Kem known. We’ll show you what to look for in the terrain and how these fossil landscapes differ from the Devonian marine sites.
We return afterward for a relaxed evening and rest.
On the final day, we visit the fossil craftsmanship area where fossils are prepared and polished, so you can see the process from raw stone to finished specimens. Then we visit a fossil museum to see important examples and connect what you found in the field to the bigger story of Morocco’s prehistoric past.
After that, we head to Rissani market for a local cultural visit—an authentic place to experience the atmosphere, stalls, and daily life of the region. We return to the hotel for the night.
The next morning, we transfer you to Errachidia for your departure.

Sahara Fossils was founded by a passionate fossil enthusiast with a deep love for the desert and its ancient history. Growing up in Erfoud, I was always surrounded by traces of ancient life. Over time, this curiosity became a real interest — not just in collecting Erfoud fossils, but in understanding the stories they tell.
I started Sahara Fossils to share this passion with travelers. For me, it's not only about guiding a tour, but about giving people the chance to experience the excitement I felt when I first discovered these prehistoric traces.
When you come on a trip with us, you’re not just joining a search — you're stepping into the world of ancient fossils, desert landscapes, and the history hidden beneath our feet.
Reviews 5.0 Hands down one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had.
I originally booked a motorbike fossil hunting excursion through Sahara Fossils, and after chatting with Mohamed, it quickly became so much more. We added the Wild Desert Camp, and before we knew it, he had helped shape an entire 4-day adventure for us, including some amazing hotel stays.
From the very beginning, Mohamed was exceptional. Anything we needed, he handled immediately and effortlessly. He even invited us to join him for iftar with his mum and extended family, which gave us such a genuine and immersive insight into Moroccan culture, something you simply can’t put a price on.
The Wild Desert Camp was a highlight in itself. Mohamed taught us how to cook traditional Moroccan food over the campfire, and we spent the evening playing cards with him and our camel guide. Sleeping under the stars in the desert felt both peaceful and completely safe it was such a special experience.
The fossil hunting day was equally incredible. Riding motorbikes across the desert added a real sense of adventure, and we found so many fossils that I genuinely wasn’t sure how I’d get them home! Mohamed was incredibly helpful and went out of his way to make sure we were sorted, which really sums up the level of care he gives to his clients.
I can honestly say this was one of the most immersive and memorable trips I’ve ever had. What Mohamed offers is worth far more than what he charges.
We will absolutely be returning and we wouldn’t book with anyone else.
Mohamed did an amazing job of teaching us and helping us to find fossils. He was so great with our 4 kids (ages 3, 5, 8, and 10). We all had the best day and learned so much! It was everything we hoped for and more! Thank you, Mohamed!!
This was a great day fossils hunting
Mohamed is very knowledgeable ,very nice and easy going.
It was a real unforgettable adventure
Absolutely amazing experience fossil hunting with Mohamed. We found a bunch of fossils from shells to trilobites so this was very exciting! He has a lot of experience and knowledge and his driver, too. They were both very kind and we had a lot of fun and also learn a lot. It really is an amazing experience hunting for fossils in the middle of the dessert so if you are coming to Merzouga, this us something you absolutely have to book. Im pretty sure he is also the only one that takes you hunting like this.
Awesome Experience with Mohamed. He knows many secret outcrops that are full of several kinds of fossils (ammonites, orthoceras, trilobotes and if you are lucky you can find some autoctonous rare organisms). It is a real adventure everyone should try. Beware of scammers around and trust this guy, he knows what to do to make it special! Hope to see you soon Momo 🙏🌈
I recently went on a fossil hunting trip in the desert with Mohamed, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the very beginning, Mohamed was incredibly kind, welcoming, and professional. He has an impressive knowledge of fossiliferous areas.
What made this trip especially unique was Mohamed’s ability to guide us to remote, rarely visited sites. These hidden spots were rich with fossils such as ammonites, orthoceras, trilobites.
If you’re looking for a genuine adventure and want to discover parts of the desert that few people ever see, I highly recommend booking a trip with Mohamed. Cherry on the top, he prepared moroccan tea setting a fire in the middle of the desert.
We casually bumped into Mohamed because his family restaurant had really good reviews (berber pizza is a MUST TRY). We were interested in the fossil hunting and we went with him. That was a BLAST! He knows many outvrops and rock formations full of trilobites, ammonites, shells, corals and more which are not that available to people (you can either walk 2 hours into the wild desert or get a jeep) but it is going to be an unforgettable experience, not just for the fossils but also for the company. Hands on guys, this is a good dude🙏🌈
Mohammed was a wonderful guide along with his very experienced partner. A short drive into the desert and we were fossil hunting. They gave us an interesting geologic walk where we found numerous varieties of fossils. Was well worth the time spent learning about the natural history of the area and fun fossil hunting with panoramic views in the mountains. Would definitely recommend!!
The teens in our family were so excited about the fossil hunting adventure and it did not disappoint. The ride to the place was already an adventure in itself, on a motorcycle and through the sand.
Hunting the fossils went with a lot of banging and clanging from tools, climbing the hill, enthusiastic shouts when a fossil was found, great fun for the whole family.
Mohamed was a great guide in leading us in this adventure. We can only recommend him and his site and offers.

Yes — if you find small fossils like trilobites or ammonites, you can keep them as a souvenir. But if you happen to uncover a 10-meter dinosaur, that one stays in the desert for science!
Finding fossils always depends on luck — some guests uncover great pieces, while others may only find smaller fragments. What is guaranteed, however, is that the sites are full of visible fossils in the rocks, and you’ll always learn how to recognize them, understand their history, and explore landscapes that were once oceans or dinosaur habitats. So even if you didn't find something very special, you’ll still experience a true journey through time.
